Cleaning Tips – by Guest Blogger Keri Garcia

Cleaning is way down on my list of “Things I Like to Do in My Spare Time,” so I’m always looking for cleaning shortcuts. One of my favorites is for cleaning the microwave – an odious chore at best: put a bowl of water in the microwave for a couple minutes…until the window gets nice and steamy. Remove the bowl and you’ll find that all the bits of who-knows-what will come off with a quick wipecleaning tips of a washcloth.

Guided Play: Pouring

Guided Play: Obstacle Course, Find the Ball, Give & Take

Today’s guided play activity was pouring. This game is great for babies 9 months to toddler/preschool age because it helps kids practice some fine motor skills that are important for development. And babies/toddlers like to put things in, take them out, and make noise!

Summer Stuff

We have been out in the sun a lot in the last few weeks, swimming and playing in the park, etc, and I got a Huggies Summer Essentials Kit to help protect Joel’s sensitive skin and make our time outdoors more enjoyable.

Garage Sale Advice and Ideas

Yesterday’s post got me excited to write about garage sale advice, so here are some of my ideas and strategy.

  1. Don’t buy something just because it’s cheap, but it because you need it. Buying things you don’t need doesn’t save you money.

BIG Bloggy Giveaway

I am going to be having a HUMONGOUS giveaway next week, starting on Monday.  We will have at least 8 winners throughout the week, possibly 12-15, so I’m going to be giving away LOTS of great stuff.  Be sure to check back Monday morning!

Bargain of the Week

tailors ham

You all know how I love bargain shopping, so I left the house at 8am on Saturday morning to wander about and hopefully discover some hidden treasure. This little gem is my Bargain of the Week. It’s a tailor’s ham, used for pressing curved areas that need shaping (like sleeves, darts, curved seams, etc.). I have been wanting one of these for quite some time now, only I don’t know of any place that carries them locally and I haven’t gotten desperate enough to just buy one online.

Book Talk: The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards

the memory keeper’s daughter kim edwards

This book was excruciating. I loved it, but I will never read it again. The writing was amazing, so much imagery, but the story was absolutely gut wrenching.

Reading with Toddlers

A reader asked if I had any ideas about reading with toddlers, so this post is in response to her question. If you have questions that you would like me to answer, email me or leave a comment and I’ll do my best.

Homemade vs. Store-bought Bread

homemade artisan bread

I’ve been thinking – with the price of flour and basically all food staples and everything else except homes and cars on the rise, I wonder if baking homemade bread is more or less expensive than buying it.

Aerated Pancakes

syrup and pancakesBoyd made pancakes for dinner last Saturday.  I need a lot of syrup on my pancakes because I like every square inch to be drenched.  The middles of the pancakes are the hardest to submerge, as I’m sure you are aware.

Yummaliciousness

This dessert is the best. It’s one of those that I just can’t control myself with. Forget intuitive eating, and meet Scotcheroos.

I grew up eating Scotcheroos, a family favorite in desserts. I think I’ve mentioned before how my family is really into dessert and we have to have it at least once every day. Scotcheroos are easy to make and delicious to eat. You can go make them right now cause I’m giving you the recipe!

Guided Play: Obstacle Course, Find the Ball, Give & Take

I have started doing “guided play” with Joel for a few minutes after lunch each day. Play is a very important part of learning and cognitive development for babies, and I want him to be learning all the things his brain is ready to learn at this stage. So I’m going to start sharing our little activities with you to give you some ideas for your pre-toddlers/toddlers.

Book Talk: The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman

the zookeeper’s wife diane ackermanThis is a story about a Antonina, a Polish woman and zookeeper’s wife, during World War II. Her story is told by Diane Ackerman, who uses Antonina’s journal to create a real and true story about Antonina’s family and their experiences during the German invasion of Poland in the early 1940s.
