Best of 2008 – 1. Spice Rack Office Supply Organizer

I like to start out each year by remembering the best parts about the last year, so the first week of January 2009 on Vanilla Joy will be my best posts from last year! This first one was featured on Org Junkie, my favorite organizing resource, and that means it was pretty good… Enjoy!

I’ve had this spice rack for several years now and haven’t been using it for the majority of that time. I found that I it was more of a pain than a convenience because it took up too much of our precious counter space and I only used a handful of the 20 spices. I’ve almost given it away several different times but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I knew that I could find some use for it!

Just a few weeks ago I got to thinking about all the little odds and ends in our office. I was trying to come up with a practical way to store them all so they would be accessible and displayed in an attractive way. I saw the spice rack in the closet and it hit me! I cleaned out all the jars, let them dry, filled them with our office and craft supplies, and voila! Finished!

This little organizational treasure has worked out beautifully. I love how it looks and how easy it is to find things that I was always losing before. Here are some things we keep in the spice rack:

  • safety pins
  • paper clips
  • keychain rings
  • staples
  • erasers
  • mechanical pencil lead
  • rubber bands
  • thumb tacks/push pins
  • buttons
  • brads
  • scrapbooking embellishments

One of my favorite things about this is the little flip top lids on the spice jars. When I need to get or put something away I just have to open the little flip lid and slide it in there. I don’t even have to take the jar out of the rack. I’m so proud of this idea! It’s functional and visually pleasing.

If you don’t have a spice rack, I’m sure you can find an empty one at a yard sale or thrift store. Keep your eyes open, because this is a great way to organize office supplies.

My hubby and I stopped at a yard sale a couple of months ago and there was a metal revolving spice rack that held 24 small jars. They still had the spices in and it was $5. I told my hubby I wanted it and he said “yeah, it is a nice one, but the spices probably aren’t any good” well, I had to try not to laugh. I was thinking “Silly, why would you think I would actually use that for
spices?” It now holds scrapbooking and stamping embellishments in style.

I always watch thrift stores, etc for a nice spike rack for this. One of these days I will find one, they are good for scrapbook embellishments as well!

I had the exact same spice rack with one difference- the lids were white. It now holds brads, eyelets, beads and other little pretties in my scrapbook room. Love the idea of using one for office supplies, too…must keep my eyes open at yard sales this spring!
