Bird List

This has been the summer of birds for our family, and all because I was eager to learn myself. I’m amazed at how this plays out in real life and am now convinced that my own self-education is necessary in my efforts to homeschool my children.

We’ve been keeping our Bird List and got these bird flash cards to keep our list on the wall where we can all see it. And it’s maybe even more fun to look through the cards representing the many birds we HAVEN’T seen… there are a lot of them! It makes me want to go on a cross country road trip to see them all.

The cards are color coded by region and the names of the birds are only on the back, so the cards are helping us learn a few different things about our bird friends.

The most helpful part about the cards for me is having similar bird cards side by side to compare and more accurately identify what we’re seeing. We have some sparrows in our backyard and until I was able to look at a handful of different kinds of sparrows side by side, I wasn’t able to figure out exactly which ones we were seeing.

My boys like to look through them and pick out their favorites. They have learned a lot of new bird names this way.

This little one likes to stand at the window and watch for our bird friends with a handful of cards in his hands.

We are so enjoying this new world of beauty in our backyard that we didn’t take the time to notice before!
