I added little ties about 5" the middle before sewing the lining on. this allowed me to close it. This is also a great pattern to use for very customized purses- strap one fabric, side another, body a third. I haven't tried it yet, but what about a slip in pocket on the outside by using the front piece but cut about 2 " shorter from the top. This would look cute with a bias strip at the top.
