I Peed in a Baby’s Diaper

We just returned from a lovely vacation visiting my family in southern Oregon. We go every summer and camp at our favorite spot – Loon Lake. It’s absolutely gorgeous with a beautiful lake and perfect sandy beach. There are tons of trees and shade and it is the most beautiful camping spot I’ve ever found.

I do enjoy camping – it’s nice to be out in pure nature without cell phone reception for a little while to take a few days to chill out and normalize.

Two things I don’t enjoy about camping? Bugs and having to pee in the middle of the night.

Without fail I have to go to the bathroom as soon as I lay down to sleep even if I’ve gone 10 minutes before, and nothing keeps me awake quite like having to pee. I always try to just forget about it and hold it and go back to sleep to avoid leaving my warm bag and walking through the scary darkness to the bathroom.

Which means I’m up all night.

Well folks, no more. I put my foot down this time and did something disgusting. I peed in a diaper. Several times each night.

And it was awesome because I never had to leave my tent and I actually was able to sleep.

All I had were size 3 diapers, so sometimes I had to use two, but it was totally worth it. And next time I’m bringing Depends.

For you curious types, I simply held the diaper in position and peed in it. I had to move it around a bit so I didn’t soak through and make a mess (which, admittedly, did happen the first night, but I learned my lesson. I’m a Mom – I get peed on all the time, just usually not by myself…)

I had a few other ideas for solving the Mid-Night Camping Pee Problem:

  1. Diaper – baby works but adult would be much better
  2. Pee Funnel – SheWee or GoGirl are two popular brands. You’d have to step outside the tent for this one but you wouldn’t have to go far or squat…
  3. Luggable Loo – a toilet seat that fits on a bucket. Your very own toilet right in your tent.
I actually used a Luggable Loo last summer when I was pregnant – I knew I was going to have to go a dozen times and the bathroom was a long walk, so I set up my little bathroom in the corner of our tent (which is very large and there were only 4 of us in it, so it’s not like I was sleeping right next to the thing, gross…) I closed the lid so it wouldn’t smell or spill and it was actually a fantastic solution, but for non-pregnant camping, I think the diaper is my first choice.
I told you this was going to be TMI…but I know I’m not the only one who has at least wanted to pee in a diaper…
So – have you ever done it? How do you handle the Potty Problem when you’re camping??? Spill it sister.
