Story Time Tip

reading together with kidsIn the last 5 weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time nursing. To keep my busy 2 year old at bay while I am unavailable, we read. I’ve discovered that having my 2 year old hold the book is not only necessary, but much better for our time reading together.

When he holds the book, he often lingers on certain pages long after I’ve finished reading the words. He is looking at the pictures and sometimes talking about them or asking questions. When I was holding the book, I read and turn the page so we can get through the book!

Next time you sit down to read with your toddler, let him hold the book so he can be in control of the speed. It’ll probably take longer to get through the book, but what’s the rush?!?

That is such a good tip. My little one isn’t old enough to read/understand books yet, but we will soon be getting there! I know when I read books to my neices/nephews, I am surely trying to read it as quickly as possible. This way the child is probably getting a lot more out of it than he/she would usually… soaking in the pictures and the words on the page. Great idea!

I found this to be true when reading to my grandson when he was about the same age! Great tip to be shared!

What a great tip- thanks for sharing! Unfortunately, my son is only going to be 1 when my 2nd is born, but hopefully he can learn to hold the book early! =)

My daughter is 4, and frequently picks the *same* books to read, night after night. To make things interesting and make sure she’s really paying attention, I’ll stop at certain points and see if she’ll fill in the words for me. She loves “catching” me when I slip up and helping me to read.

Good idea!! My son is 13 months and I love it when he walks over and picks up a book for me to read to him!! I am still nursing him so I read books to him while he nurses….It is amazing how a love for reading can start when they so young!
