Top 10 Books from 2010

popular young adult fiction and classic novels

I read 53 books last year, and these were my top 10 favorites, in no particular order:

  1. The Books of Bayern (#1-4) by Shannon Hale
  2. The Scarlet Pimpernel by Emmuska Orczy
  3. Fire by Kristing Cashore
  4. Airman by Eoin Colfer
  5. The Help by Kathryn Stockett
  6. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
  7. These is My Words by Nancy Turner
  8. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
  9. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly
  10. The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

I just went to the Family Literacy Symposium at the Provo City Library last weekend and got lots of great new book recommendations (especially YA Fic) so 2011 is going to be a great literary year! Check in tomorrow to see a list of new books I can’t wait to read.

What were some of your favorites from last year?

  1. Oh, I am excited to read some of these. I read the Hour Glass Door and The Golden Spiral by Lisa Mangum and really liked them. The 3rd of the Trilogy comes out this Summer!

  2. My favorite books from last year (that I haven’t already told you about) were Madame Curie by Eve Curie (best biography ever!) Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and Turtle in Paradise by Jennifer Holm (it was a newbery honor even!)

Also, YA/juv lit series I read and liked that I don’t think I told you about were the Chains series by Halse Anderson and The Ranger’s Apprentice Series by John Flanagan.

  3. 2010 for me was a year for audiobooks. I downloaded most of them from NetLibrary (electronic resource available through Provo City Library). I really liked titles from the “Modern Scholar” collection – they’re more like lectures divided into chapters, but they are really interesting and easy to listen to. My favorites: Behold the Mighty Dinosaur and A History of the English Language.

  4. I have been wanting to ready The Help. I just found it on Goodreads.
I also want to read The Memory Keeper’s Daughter, have you read it?
One of my favorites from last year was Lovely Bones. Kind of dark, but a good read. Other favorites were The Shack, which you suggested :), The Secret Life of Bees, and the Robert Farrell Smith books. He is a *great* LDS comedic author. :)

  5. I read “These Is My Words” after you recommended it. I really enjoyed it and also read the other two books in that trilogy – all three books were great. Thanks for recommending it!

  7. I’m reading the evolution of Calpurnia Tate right now, I like it a lot. Have you read The Miraculous Adventures of Edward Tulane? Or The Invention of Hugo Cabret? Both are excellent. Probably 5th grade level, but that’s where my reading has been lately!

    • I did read the Adventures of Edward Tulane and liked it, but Hugo Cabret is still on my list. And I know what you mean…sometimes I need to not have to think too hard about what I’m reading…

  8. I loved The Help. I was resistant to reading it at first but once I got started, I finished in a day. It was very well written and fascinating. I have the Evolution of Calpunia Tate in the pile of “To Read Soon” books.
