Baby Giveaway #2 — Medela Swing Electric Breastpump

THE PRIZE

medela-swing-breast-pump

Medela is giving the Swing electric breastpump ($149.99) to one Vanilla Joy reader!

MY REVIEW

If you read my post about our new baby, you know I was having some trouble with my milk supply at first. The one thing that saved me was this breastpump. In the first week, I used this pump 5-6 times a day to encourage my milk to come in, and in the second week I used it almost as frequently to try to increase my milk supply, and it worked! I’m happy to say that after 1 month, my milk is doing fine, and I have the Swing to thank for it!

Medela pumps have a two-phase expression mechanism designed for faster let-down and flow, which means you get more milk in less time. I got the manual Harmony pump for my first baby, and it also had this feature. With the Swing, it’s even better because it’s electric! It also has adjustable vacuum and speed to be as comfortable for each individual mother as possible.

The Swing is compact and lightweight, so it’s easy to carry with you in your diaper bag, use on the go with batteries or at home with the AC adapter. Here’s what comes in the box:

  • 2 collection containers & lids
  • 1 container stand
  • 1 valve
  • 3 membranes
  • SoftFit breastshield
  • Carry Bag
  • Breastfeeding Information Guide
  • Tubing
  • AC Adapter
  • Battery Power Option (4AA batteries not included)
  • Neck/Shoulder strap
  • Instruction Manual

Like all Medela pumps, all the little parts on the Swing pump come apart for easy cleaning. You can take it apart, throw everything in the dishwasher, and know your pump is clean and sanitary.

An electric pump is one of those necessities if you’re planning on breastfeeding. Manual ones are okay, but electric is so much nicer and easier to use! It only takes one hand, so you can still hold your baby, read a book, or work the TV remote while you’re pumping. I have been thrilled with the Swing – it works great and is affordable. Thanks, Medela!

Oh my goodness!! I hated my pump.. (it was a different brand) that I used with my first baby and once my baby stopped nursing as well at 4months, I tried to pump to maintain my milk until he would nurse better… but my milk supply very much suffered because the pump was terrible and after 2 months of trying to maintain milk, I finally gave up and went to bottles and I HATED IT!! I also really need a good pump to use at work- I work nights as a nurse every other weekend now that I have kids and I NEED a good pump that is efficient and fast so that I can get back to work quickly…

I’d love to win the pump because I pump for donation and I am not really a fan of the dinky manual pump that I’m currently using! I know Medela is a great, trusted brand!

This breastpump would be a great help with my 12 day old son. I am learning so much about breastfeeding and this would help me out and even help dad become more involved in feedings.

34 Aura June 15, 2009 at 5:01 pm

my past 4 babies were preemies in the NICU having a portable pump that works well is an essential. With my next kid my twins will still be little so I need something very portable and lightweight and quick so I can pump in whatever little time I have

35 Staci J. June 15, 2009 at 5:03 pm

I really need this one. We are expecting our third child and neither of our kids have been able to breastfeed. I pumped for my first by renting a pump, but it was so expensive so I just formula fed my second one. I would much rather pump and this would be fabulous to have so I won’t have to resort to formula.

The Medela pump I used– but no longer have– was an absolute life saver for me with my son. I had a hard time building up my supply and once I started using the pump I was at peace knowing my son was getting enough milk! I will definitely need a new one for our next baby.

58 Laura Smiley June 16, 2009 at 7:51 pm

I am 10 weeks pregnant with my first and need everything! I found your blog by googling how to make crib bedding. I love your simple instructions. I would so enjoy the prize! I don’t qualify through the Medela survey since I’m not a mom yet- but that doesn’t mean I don’t need the pump to get ready!

59 amy p June 17, 2009 at 12:40 am

I did the survey. I would love to win this for my second child. I had a really cheap one with my first and it broke and I would love to be able to use this while nursing.

I pump only for donation (I stay at home with my baby), I use a hand pump and don’t get a whole lot of milk with it, and I am on an allergy elimination diet so my milk goes to the most sick and most sensitive of babies and people.

66 Shannon Carver June 17, 2009 at 2:34 pm

I’m returning to work in a few weeks (8 weeks postpartum) and I want to continue breastfeeding my son for as long as possible, at minimum to his first birthday. I’m currently renting a Medela Symphony which is fabulous, even better than the Lactina I used for my first son. However, I know realistically we would not be able to continue renting the Symphony for an entire year, and I would hate to jeopardize my son’s milk supply. A Medela Swing pump would be a godsend for us.

I completed the survey and would love to win this pump. My first 2 boys (14 and 8) were formula fed, so when i found out I was pregnant with #3 last year, I was bound and determined to breast feed. My baby girl was born in Dec. and has been a great nurser from day one. We had some jaundice issues, so I’ve had a rental Medela Lactina since then. It’s expensive, but worth every penny. I went back to work in March and I take my Lactina to work and pump two times a day. There are times at home, though, where I need to pump. I almost bought a Medela Swing to keep at home but a wonderful friend of mine gave me her Medela Original Pump In Style (another fabulous Medela product, btw). Well, the dog chewed the rubber knob and now it doesn’t work. :( I almost cried. I’ve now resorted to the Lactina hand pump to use while at home and would LOVE to win the Medela Swing! :)

With my son, nursing was very difficult. I used a Medela hand-pump for most of the first few weeks after I had him, and then used it until it began to fall apart from such constant use! But nursing was still a struggle. Until I got an electric pump from a friend, I never could produce enough. Now that I am pregnant again, I’m doing a lot more research and preparing myself for nursing in a way that I didn’t before. One of the items I know I need is a good pump of my own. Here’s to crossing my fingers that I could get this one! This sounds perfect! I just feel so strongly that breast is best, and I really want to give this next baby that shot at the best.
