MY REVIEW

The Healthy Family Cookbook

America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks are my go-to. I have the 3 family cookbooks (plus a few others) and I use them almost exclusively. The recipes are perfect and there are hundreds to choose from.

My latest ATK Cookbook is the Healthy Family Cookbook, and I particularly love finding recipes that use healthy grains like barley, bulgur wheat, quinoa, wheat berries, amaranth, farro, and kamut, to name a few.

Even more applicable to everyday home cooks are the low-fat options that don’t scrimp on flavor. They’ve tried everything and know what works.

whole wheat pizza dough

I’m just getting into this cookbook and have so far tried the following recipes:

  • Fusilli  with Asparagus, Peas, and Arugula
  • Cuban Black Beans
  • Whole-Wheat Pizza Dough
  • Pizza with Garlicky Broccoli and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
  • Whole Wheat Sandwich Bread
  • Everyday Macaroni and Cheese
  • Baked Chicken Fingers (Best chicken fingers EVER)

The recipes are fresh and filling with fewer calories and less fat than most traditional recipes, and there are so many more I can’t wait to try.

Like all America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks, there’s a section at the very beginning including information about healthy cooking guidelines, essential ingredients to healthy cooking, nutrition basics, measuring, and equipment essentials. I rarely end up Googling anything in the kitchen anymore – I just check my cookbooks!

ATK recipes totally speak for themselves, and if you’ve never browsed one of their cookbooks, pick one up. You’ll be hooked!

This Healthy Family Cookbook is a great start to cooking healthier for your family and getting more of the nutrients we need from the food we eat. There’s plenty of variety in difficulty level and recipes, so check it out!

Lodge Enamel Dutch Oven

lodge enamel dutch oven

Many of the America’s Test Kitchen recipes (particularly soups and some meats) require an enamel Dutch oven, so I’ve been wanting one of these for sooo long.

I wanted a Lodge because I knew the quality and value would be great, just like their cast iron dutch ovens.

lodge enamel dutch oven

With my new Lodge enamel Dutch oven, I made Cuban Black Beans (from the Healthy Family Cookbook). This recipes requires some stove-top sauteeing and then oven time. Lodge enamel Dutch ovens are ovensafe up to 400 degrees, and you only dirty one dish! I love that.

I also made Corn Chowder from the Family Cookbook (which requires a Dutch oven), and it was amazing.

You can use Lodge Enamel Dutch ovens on most cooking surfaces (gas, ceramic, electric), and in the oven. I’ve noticed it heats very evenly, and it’s so easy to clean.

Lodge has a great variety of cast iron cookware for all kinds of cooks. They’re reasonably priced and the enamel Dutch ovens are so versatile.

I would love to win this cookebook! I have found that my favorite products are kitchen tools and gadgets. Although they may clutter my cupboards, they make cooking and preping easy. You can never have too many of those things to help out. T

I REALLY WANT this cookbook. I have the Family Cookbook and would love to add to the collection. AND I’m in the market for a dutch oven.

7 A.J. Dub May 9, 2011 at 3:10 pm

There are so many cookbooks that I want from them, but the top two are Slow Cooker Revolution and Best One Dish Suppers (Can you tell I like easy meals?)
I really like their recipes, I get their newsletter and save all of them for reference. I would love to have their cookbook.
I am jealous of your red Lodge pot. We have some misc cast iron cookware for camping but I never think to get stuff for my kitchen.

8 Kristi May 9, 2011 at 4:10 pm

oh, please please please pick me! I would love this cookbook (and the dutch oven too!) I hate when you get a cookbook, but only a few of the recipes are something you would actually cook and eat. I know ATK cookbooks aren’t like that – they are full of recipes people actually use.

The Test Kitchen cookbooks look amazing! As for cook wear, I love cast iron and imagine enamel-covered would be even better.

My favorite products are gadgets. There is a right tool for every kitchen job and I pride myself in knowing when and how to use my tools to make the prepping process more efficient. Of course, much of this was learned from watching ATK every Sunday afternoon from 2-3 in beautiful NC. A lovely Sunday treat!

I would be a very proud owner of this cookbook and gorgeous dutch oven and they would both be frequently used in my kitchen!

I love cooking with garlic and am a big fan of cast iron. It never goes bad or loses its coating. I also

I love love ATK! I discovered their recipes last December, and I’ve been totally hooked since then. I borrowed The Healthy Family Cookbook from the library, and was sad when I had to return it. We also made the Corn Chowder this week, and with all the rain we’ve been getting – it’s the perfect comfort food.
So excited for this giveaway – Maybe it will turn out to be a late Mother’s Day gift for me!

Another thing I have loved about ATK is their equipment recommendations. I’ve got through 3 different blenders in the last 2 years (I use them all the time). I finally looked to ATK for a suggestion, invested a little more into a Kitchen Aid 5 Speed Blender – and it is amazing! I was a little nervous at first to spend $100 on a blender, but I love it! I have friends who have BlendTecs, but I am completely happy with my blender for 1/3 the cost!

Another thing I love about ATK is their product/brand recommendations. I love that they tell you exactly how to achieve the best results, and sometimes it’s as simple as switching the brand of a key ingredient. Don’t you love getting yummy results the first time you make a recipe?! I make hundreds of meals each year, and having ATK take out the guesswork makes my life easier (and more delicious)!

I was looking for appliques and found your wonderful site. I am a fan of what I have seen and will enjoy reading more in the future. I would love to receive America’s Test Kitchen Family edition as it would be great to know how to make those quick changes to healthier options. I am a big fan of their work already and would love to learn even more.
