NEW FAVORITE BOOK

these is my wordsMy sister in law told me for months that I should read These is My Words, and I only finally did because it was my book club book for June. I don’t know why I was hesitant – I think maybe the title had something to do with it. But I just finished it and I’m ready to turn back to page 1 and read it again.

Summer Reading List

Guest post by Jennifer from The Literate Mother.

Every year about this time, I start to feel a small wave of panic settle in. Knowing that summer is just around the corner is exciting, but daunting. I am almost as relieved as my kids are to be done with reports, projects, homework and the strict schedule that a busy family demands during the school year. But the break from school comes with its own set of challenges, the largest of which, for me, involves, “Mom, what can I do? I’m bored.”

2009 book recommendations list collage

Thanks to all the excellent recommendations from my like literary-minded friends, 2009 was a year filled with good books. Here is a complete (I think…) list of books I read in 2009. I would recommend every one except #s 22, 37, 38, and 39.

Book Talk: Elantris

elantris

After I finished this book last night, I handed it over to my husband and told him HE HAD to read it. I like me a good fantasty book, and Elantris is a must read.

Book Talk: Holes

I’m always on the lookout for great books for boys, and this is a winner. I remember hearing lots of good things about this book years ago but I’d never read it until now, and it is a great story with some great lessons.

Book Talk: Juvenile Fiction

I recently read A Wrinkle in Time for the first time ever and am currently reading Ella Enchanted. Every so often I get on a juvenile fiction kick, and I really enjoyed both of these. As I have been reading I’ve thought that both of these books would be excellent read-alouds for young kids. (I can’t wait to start reading chapter books aloud to my kids before bedtime!)

Book Talk: The Siblings Busy Book by Lisa Hanson and Heather Kempskie

sbb

The authors of The Siblings’ Busy Book are twin sisters Lisa Hanson and Heather Kempskie who have lots of great ideas that kids from ages 3 months to 9 years can participate in together. Every page in this book has at least one fun kids activity with variations so children of all ages can essentially be doing the same thing and learning to play cooperatively together. You can keep 3 kids busy without doing 3 different things. Each idea is easy to do and requires basic materials!

Book Talk: Is This a Phase? Child Development & Parent Strategies Birth to 6 Years

is-this-a-phaseThis has been the most helpful book that I’ve found so far about child development and parenting strategies. It provides a very thorough explanation of developmental stages, which really help me understand how to handle the things my child does. It then discusses solutions and ideas for dealing with every day challenges that come with each stage.

Book Talk: Mary Had a Little Lamp

This is such a fun book, especially if your child is old enough to know that they’re getting it wrong!

We first heard this story at our local library’s story time. It’s a silly story about Mary who takes her little LAMP everywhere with her, until one day she decides she can have more fun without it. You’ll have to read the book to see what she carries with her next!

Book Talk: The Giant Jam Sandwich

I have one more nursery bedding tutorial to post and a few other baby sewing projects, but I’m running a little behind. So for a change of pace, it’s BOOK TALK!!
