{The winner of the $50 bundle of patterns from YouCanMakeThis.com is…Shannon! She said, “I have been wanting to get the boys ties pattern for my two little guys. Store bought ties are so expensive! I would love to win this and improve my sewing/self reliance/gift making skills!”
Congratulations, Shannon. Email me at kelsey[at]vanillajoy[dot]com and I’ll put you in contact with the sponsor. Thanks, and have fun with your new patterns!}
We have three giveaways happening early this week, and all of them will be sewing products. Later this week we’ll be back to more scrapbooking and paper crafting!
Today’s prize is for something every seamstress needs…a good pattern!
REVIEW
All patterns are not created equal. I’ve learned that since trying out the You Can Make This downloadable patterns. I find that with lots of the big name store bought patterns (not to name any names…) the instructions are confusing and use the method that is easiest to explain rather than what will give you the highest quality result, which is frustrating. I want to know the best way to put something together so it doesn’t look homemade!
The downloadable patterns from You Can Make This include basic step-by-step instructions with full color pictures to go along with each step. So someone is actually making the item alongside you and telling you how to do it. And they have all kinds of patterns for both children and adult’s clothing, home decor, craft projects, and more.
I made this little bucket hat, and the instructions were so easy to understand. The methods used were for the most basic sewers, which was great because I knew exactly what the end goal was. Because I could understand everything so easily, I was able to substitute some of my own methods that are faster with fewer steps, something I’ve never felt comfortable doing with a store bought pattern.
I also loved having the instructions on the computer – I didn’t print them out, just kept my laptop close by. So I won’t have to worry about where to put the pattern instructions now that I’m finished with the project, but I can always pull them up when I need them again.
I will be making another of these hats for my baby-to-be so he and his brother can match! There are some other patterns I’m itching to try as well…

My favorite is the “Just a Pinch” potholders. My 7-year old loves to cook/bake (she made dinner one night with just a tiny bit of help from me) and her main complaint is all the potholders/oven mitts are too big. I am going to make these for her. Thanks for a great site…

I really like the Kimonos baby booties. They’d be perfect gifts. I also like the ties pattern. I know it’s probably really simple, but a pattern would make it so easy and definately be put to good use.
