youcanmakethis.com bucket hat downloadable pattern

So I told you yesterday that I made this little hat from a YouCanMakeThis.com pattern, and my son loves it. He wears it around all day long, even when we’re inside. I can’t wait to put my two little boys in matching hats!

I used scraps that I already had and found remnants at Joann to make up the rest. You can buy remnants for so cheap, I didn’t spend very much money on this hat at all. And the second one will probably take an hour or two from start to finish, so it’s a quick and easy project. If you’re just starting out, this pattern is perfect.

Maybe I’ll make my husband and I hats as well and we can all match!

Oh, I have some great greens and purples scraps from my first and only quilt that would look great on this.

He is very cute!

Oh, so cute! You did a marvelous job. And did you mean for it to match his shirt so well? :0)

I have so many scraps of fabric–this would be a great way to use them.

So cute! I have a childrens ocean scene scraps and I been looking for a way to use them. This looks adorable and would be perfect for a summertime hat. Thank you for introducing us to this site. The chef hat pattern is free which I’m going to try out since my daughter has been wanting one for kitchen play

These hats are great for keeping out the summer sun from their eyes. I plan to make a few for my grandkids.

I have never made a hat before. I know it says I can make it, but its still intimidating. Of course, even on basic projects I end up ripping out half the seams and sewing them again.

That hat is too cute, and perfect for summer! I just love the remnant section. I hardly ever get around to actually making anything! What IS fun though, is letting the kids pick their own fabric from that section. They get a kick out of choosing fabric just like mommy does. It makes them happy and I don’t feel like I’ve spent a ton of money!

How cute is that?!! I would have thought it would take a long time to make a hat and am surprised it worked up so quickly. Isn’t it fun when you make something, it comes out right, and your son loves to wear it?!!!

Well thanks girls! I love reading all your comments. This hat really was super fun and easy to make. This would be a great beginning sewing project if you have kids old enough, or for yourself. I remember my mom trying to teach me to sew by making a skirt or something. That was always very discouraging because of the waistband or zipper and hem, etc. This hat is so basic, it would have made a much better first project.

And some of you have talked about the remnants section – I love it too! I didn’t used to, I don’t know when I discovered it, but now I check and if there are cute prints I try and think of something to do with the fabric, rather than the other way around. Maybe that’s why I have so much extra fabric! I bought a bunch of fleece scraps intending to make hand puppets, and haven’t gotten around to it yet. Soon, I think…

Anyway, thanks for all your comments! It’s so wonderful to get to connect with other crafty women this way!

This is super cute, but I have a problem. My little boy refuses to wear a hat of any kind. Anyone else have this problem??? Drives me crazy especially in the summer when he needs one to protect him from the sun. He is 3 and very adamant. Any advice??

It’s so cute. I think I will have to make one for my daughter :) We live in Florida so she doesn’t go outside without a bucket hat on.
