MY REVIEW

I LOVE to sew and if I have a pattern, I can sew almost anything (at least anything that I’ve tried so far…) with at least moderately pleasing results…

The patterns are the problem.

I see all of you in the blogosphere sewing amazing things by tracing an old item of clothing, and that’s just not how I roll. I need a pattern and I’m sick to death of the big name pattern companies because they just don’t have patterns for the kinds of garments I want to sew!

So I went looking online for cute patterns for children’s clothing using knit fabric.

And I found Fishsticks Designs.

Her patterns are exactly what I was looking for. If I had dreamed up something specific and custom, her shop would have been it exactly.

On her about page she says, “most of my patterns are sewn with cotton knit fabrics because that is exactly the fabric that most of us live our lives in.” YES!!!

I want to sew garments my children will love to wear every day, things that are durable, washable, comfortable. Fishsticks patterns are all of these things!

Here are a few favorite Fishsticks patterns that I’ve made (the Dino Dudes fabric is Michael Miller – LOVE IT!):

Underwear, jammies, hoodies – this is what we live in and wear every day and my boys are absolutely loving wearing the fabrics/prints they have chosen.

Each pattern can be purchased as a paper or PDF printable pattern. The printable versions are very easy to put together, each pattern includes with several sizes and garments styles/variations, and every single pattern I made took less than 1 hour. They’re quick, easy, and so perfect for my kids!

Each pattern also comes with easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions with color photos for every step so even the most inexperienced sewist could tackle one of these patterns and turn out a successful garment.

I am so thrilled to have found Fishsticks and these patterns – they are perfect for my kids and for me!

That Which Way Out jacket is so fabulous. I don’t know if I could do it, but if I could, man, my kids would be in them all the time. Thanks for introducing me to these, they are great. I’ll have to get brave enough to try one day.

Are you *serious,* the Charlie Hoodie took you less than one hour?!

3 leigh January 2, 2013 at 1:39 am

11 Liz January 2, 2013 at 6:22 am

I really enjoy Bonnie’s patterns, real clothes for real kiddos! I use the little one layette pattern for all my baby shower gifts and am working on making flannel shirts for my son using the camp shirt pattern….and I have plans to make him some pants with the inside or out pocket pants pattern because they work for toddlers in cloth diapers too! :)

19 Melissa January 2, 2013 at 7:11 am

I LOVE the inside or out pocket pants — more are on the “must sew” list for my 2 year old boy. Next on my wish list is the Playdate bag!

20 Katie January 2, 2013 at 7:17 am

Love the Charlie Tee/Hoodie. I had the adult one and made one for myself that I wear All.The.Time. So comfy and the fit is perfect.

I absolutely LOVE the Charlie T. Anytime I’m asked to make a top, my first thought is “Can I use the charlie t pattern?” Even as an outerwear piece, it is so simple and quick to make, hood and pocket included. The best part to me is the fit is perfect on every single one I’ve made. Kids, chuncky preteens, and adults, they are fit wonderfully. I have a few fishsticks patterns, but I want more…make that ALL of them.

I adore the Charlie Hoodie! I’ve sewn that pattern more than any other pattern I’ve ever owned! I’ve made it for gifts, costumes and more! I love that I can whip up a hoodie for my kids so quickly and it can be different each time! I love making them with fleece w. appliques on the front! SOOO cute!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Fishsticks patterns. I have every intention of owning all of them before the year is up. Like you, I got frustrated with Big 4 patterns, found these & I will never look back. I have my own son & 6 nephews I sew for, so these are just what I need. My favorite at the moment is the undercover boxer briefs. We’re using them as trainers for my 19 month old currently. They are perfect!

Favorite non-Fishsticks pattern is the Noodlehead 241 Tote.

81 Wendy Hickman January 2, 2013 at 9:12 pm

I would by no means call myself a sewer but I would love to be one! What caught my eye and interests me the most is the kids boxer brief underwear! Absolutely love them. My husband laughs because I said I would love to be able to make our own underwear but my gosh, they are so expensive and so little material is used. I don’t get it? Anyway, I have a really hard time finding the right size to fit my 7 year old who will be 8 in March 2013 and just finally tipped the scale at 40 lbs! He still needs either an extra small or a 5T! But I can never find eithe and he won’t wear plain old briefs…they have to be Boxer Briefs…but if I do happen to find some they are always the worst colors and/or designs. So I am looking forward to buying a “good” sewing machine and the Underwear pattern. I just hope it’s as easy as it looks it should be! Wendy Hickman

I like Fishsticks Patterns because they remind me of regular fish sticks, which are pretty good when enjoyed with some tartar sauce which reminds me of tartar control Crest, which reminds me of my family crest or shield, which reminds me of S.H.I.E.L.D. from the latest round of super-hero movies, of which the best was The Avengers, in which the best character was the Hulk, which reminds me of buying in bulk, which is why I always buy Fishsticks patterns in bulk. So how ’bout entering me in this contest?
