MY REVIEW

I really didn’t understand how much I needed a new vacuum cleaner until I got the Oreck XL Gold. The first thing that is AWESOME about this vacuum cleaner is it takes up only a 12″ x 10″ rectangle of my precious closet space. That is a big deal! Our old vacuum was a canister style and took up sooo much space, didn’t store well at all/anywhere, and was akward to use. This Oreck is like going from a covered wagon to a Porsch, and I’m serious!

So it’s great before I even turned it on, and how well it works is just the icing on the cake. Weighing only 9 pounds, the Oreck upright vacuum cleaner is light enough to carry up and down our 2 flights of stairs and also to use with a baby on my hip. It’s also the quietest vacuum cleaner I think I’ve ever heard, so Elliot doesn’t mind it so much. And he really likes the little light on the front too!

oreck_vacuum_pathAir flow travels at 102 mph so you’d think the vacuum would need a huge motor, but because of the direct path from your carpet to the bag, the XL series actually has a pretty small motor (the reason for its light weight and the use of only 1/3 of the electricity of regular vacuums). The XL Gold also has just the right shape for cleaning under and against furniture and walls, making those hard-to-reach spots not so hard-to-reach.

And most importantly, with a brush that rotates over 6500 times per minute and 102 mph air flow, this upright vacuum picks up more from your carpet. Clean carpet is pretty high on my list of priorities so we have a no shoe rule in our home that is strictly enforced. But the carpet gets dirty anyway, and with two little kids crawling and laying on that carpet, I want it to be as clean as possible! oreck_handheld_vac

The XL Gold also includes a handheld vacuum with 8 attachments. The Oreck website suggests using the handheld for areas like stairs, furniture, ceiling fans, molding, bookshelves, curtains, drapes, corners, and lampshades. Frankly, most of those items have not been cleaned at my house in a very long time. I just needed the right kind of gadget!

Oreck is one of the top vacuum cleaners, and the XL Gold fits right in with all their other hard working and easy to use vacuums. Thanks, Oreck!

  1. Maybe if I had this Oreck, I would vacuum more often!
Sadly, I vacuum once every two weeks when my Shiba Inu isn’t shedding. When he is “molting” as I call it (2 times a year at least), there is fluff EVERYWHERE, and I have to vacuum 2x/week. We’re in the habit of removing shoes (Far East-style) at the entry to reduce the amount of dirt tracked in, so I think that helps some.

  2. Ooh! I added your RSS Feed to my Feed Folder, so I think I get an extra entry? Need a vacuum, mine is the “covered wagon” and I sure would love a “Porsche”!

  3. I actually vaccuum about every other day. THe reason is my daughter is asthmatic and it helps keep her clear to vaccuum up all the gunk and dust mites.

  4. I have to say I don’t vacuum as much as I used to. We replaced the carpet downstairs with wood flooring, but we still have carpet on the stairs and in the bedrooms. I probably vacuum these one every two weeks, more if something gets spilled or broken.

  5. Okay I try for twice a week but it is really more like once a week or whenever the dog smell gets to me whatever happens first.

  6. I never vacuum. I have a cleaning person every other week and they vacuum. I know I should do it more often, but I just plain dont have time. Anyway, I hope I win this because our vacuum just broke!

  7. I am ashamed to say I only vacuum about once a month or when company is coming! I hate hauling our canister up and down the stairs. This one looks a lot more usable!

  8. Ugh. My almost one year old HATES when I vacuum – he cries every time and if I hold him he shakes, and if I do it while he’s sleeping sometimes it wakes him up. Sigh. So… I only vacuum about every 2 weeks even though I need to be doing it 2 times a week or more!! I would LOVE a more quiet vacuum!!

  9. We have to borrow my mom’s vacuum currently so honestly, I am embarrassed to say that it is only like once a month, sometimes every 2 months. In desperate need of a vacuum here!!

  10. I vacuum once a week, sometimes more, especially during shedding season (we have 4 cats of various fur lengths). I have heard wonderful things about Orecks – a friend of mine who cleans houses for a living swears by hers and I know it would do a great job on cat fur!

  11. Thanks for doing this – not only would I love, love, love to win this vacuum, of course! But I’ve been wondering how often other people vacuum. I try to vacuum once a week, with the key word being “try”. The result and truth, every other week. That’s my carpeting in the bedrooms. The kitchen and family room, every three days or so. When my daughter was a food-throwing baby, three times a day. When she was a food-throwing toddler, three time a day. Whew, our food-throwing days are over and she’s even gotten very good at not spilling! The stairs are my least favorite – once a month. Our mostly unused living room and dining room – every two weeks.

Now that I’ve put you to sleep and made you sorry you asked….

Thanks to you and Oreck for a great giveaway.

  12. I vacuum every other day. We don’t have a lot of rug space, but the area rug in the family room seems to be CRUMB central…and the baby loves to find these crumbs and eat them, along with any fuzzys, dust, paper that is left down there. Yuck.

    Reply
  13. I don’t vacuum often enough because my current vacuum spits dust back into the air and makes a mess. I hate not being able to keep the dust down. It drives me crazy. Still I only vacuum maybe once a month because of it. Yuk!

  14. This is timely — I need a vacuum cleaner!!

Usually my children vacuum, but I have them do it about twice a month. I’d like it done every week, but Saturdays when they’re available are sometimes busy with other things.

  15. I vacuum my laminate floors downstairs about ever other day. Carpet areas downstairs about once a week, staircase and upstairs about every other week, unless my husband gets annoyed and does it. I’m 8 months pregnant and using the “I cant carry my canister vacuum up the stairs” excuse to get out of vacuuming the stairs and upstairs more often =)

  16. On average I probably vacuum 1-2 times a day, but in reality what actually happens is that every 2-3 days I get on this vacuuming kick and vacuum like 3-4 times in that day. It’s ridiculous. I absolutely hate how dirty my carpets look. As soon as I come across an extra $100 to get the carpets cleaned a no shoe rule will be enforced at my house too. The carpets are just sooo yucky. I sure hope I cmoe home with this vacuum soon, because my poor vacuum is on it’s last legs of life…

  17. I HONESTLY vacuum 5 or 6 times a week. My carpet shows every little tiny crumb, and I have an 11 month who gets into everything and makes messes out of everything, and a husband who is the same way :) So I vacuum just about every day.

  18. I vacuum maybe a couple times a week. Why you ask? Because every vacuum I have bought in the last few years only lasts a few months! Sometimes the hose doesn’t work. Or my favorite, the bottom sucks things up and then spits the stuff back out! (feels great on your legs, lol)
I am currently using my stick vac that I have had for a few years. Yup, it has outlasted about 4 vacuums! So I do know the importance of a good vacuum!

Thanks for all your wonderful ideas. I have used quite a few for my daughter who is expecting in early Nov. Keep up the great site!

  21. I vacuum probably every other week. My vacuum is currently not working, so I have been using my shop vac, which cleans fine, but is sure a pain to haul around, especially since I have a 4-level, multi-level house. Not fun! I would love to win this vacuum, so glad you are offering it!

  22. I have a toddler that seems to create crumbs and other messes. I vacuum most days, some day more than once. Lets just say I can imagine my hand me down vacuum, that I have had for 6 years getting ready to kick the bucket soon. And we aren’t even talking about vacuuming stairs (or even bedrooms). Its all in the living room and dining room.

I was glad when we got new carpet LOL but still should vaccum just as much…thanks to my cheap $50 walmart vaccum i get to vaccum often, somday I hope to get a nice one like this.

  31. I vacuum about once a week, but am not very rigid about it. If the kids decided it was Make Confetti Day, I’ll pull out the vacuum even if I just did it a day or two ago. And if I’m really busy, it might go for two weeks or more… you wanted honest!

Needless to say winning this would be a miracle.

  42. First off, I have to say that this is an awesome giveaway! Secondly, I would like to let you know how desperately I’m in need of a good vacuum. The one I currently have generally needs to go over a spot 5 or more times to get it clean (and still sometimes it’s not even totally clean)
In answer to your question, I vacuum once a week. I should vacuum more, I know, but what can you do? Maybe having a vacuum that isn’t so much work will inspire me to vacuum more ;)
    Thank you for the chance!
    Katie

P.S. I did visit the Oreck site and totally fell in love with their Halo vacuum cleaner, not only because it has the same name of my favorite video game, but because it has a UV-C germ killing light! Who couldn’t use that?

  44. I vacuum the living room at least every other day and the bedrooms 2x week. The filtration system of the vacuum caught my eye with the phrase, “Dust less often!” Dusting is one of the things right above cleaning the toilets for me. I also thought the handheld vacuum would come in very hand. Trying to vacuum the stairs can be quite the task. I’ve almost been toppled over by my current vacuum several times on the stairs.

  48. interesting question. It depends on the week or on the day. Sometimes I’m just busy with other things. Years ago I used to have a cleaning routine. I do like to have the floors vacuumed because it helps the whole house look cleaner, at least every few days. If I only get one room done, the vacuum sets out; and if someone stops by, at least they know it’s a work in progress. : )

But now that my vacuum doesn’t work very well – can’t hear it sucking up anything! – I don’t enjoy vacuuming as much because I feel like I might as well just be running a blow dryer over the carpet. I have ALWAYS wanted an Oreck but they are pricey and some bill, etc, HAD to be paid before I could treat myself to an Oreck. 91. I was debating… Dyson or Oreck. Finding a great deal on a Dyson made my decision. However I recently had a Kirby salesman show me just how my vacuum only picks up the surface dirt and carpet fibers. I’m kinda wishing I’d have bought the Oreck, but will have to get a couple more years out of my current vac before I can spend again! The Oreck would def be better for my neck and back! Oh and I vacuum twice a week, unless I see signs it is needed more.

  92. I try to vacuum about once a week, on Saturdays (“try” being the key word here). We got a cheap vacuum cleaner for our wedding & it hasn’t helped much. We have laminate floors downstairs, so the vacuum cleaner just blows dirt around – literally – and we have old carpet upstairs, and the vacuum often gets clogged on the carpet. (We moved into an apartment recently that had 2 dogs & 3 cats, and I’m not sure if the owners ever cleaned. It was quite a sight when we moved in!) Needless to say, we could sure use a new vacuum cleaner that works. What a great giveaway! :)

  93. This is embarassing… I only vacuum the MAIN walkways in our apartment every few weeks, and the corners, under furniture, etc a few times a year (don’t tell my mom!) With a baby on the way and a transition to working from home part-time, I need to keep things cleaner!

  94. I vacuum my downstairs about once a week and my upstairs once every two weeks. Terrible, I know, but it is what it is! I would absolutely LOVE a vacuum. Anything’s gotta beat my little $40 vacuum I currently have! This is soooooo cool!

  95. ACK! I **need** to vacuum more than I do, but I hit at least s o m e rooms weekly, others go much longer.

The timing of finding your site is perfect…my vacuum broke YESTERDAY and I’m kind of desperate.

Does sympathy come into play? :)

  96. i vacuum about every threes days. My son loves to eat cheerios and when he gets full he tends to drop them. On the weekends I have been known to vacuum up to 3 times a day depending on his mood. A new vacuum would be great to win.

  97. Ok I admit it. I generally only vacuum when I have company. I need to vacuum more often but I hate dragging the vacuum up and down the stairs. I really need another one so I will vacuum more often.

  98. I NEED to vacuum daily, but weekly, if I’m lucky. I have had such BAD luck with vacuum cleaners. They have not lasted more than a year and my current one is held together with duct tape. I HOPE I WIN!!!!!!

  99. I vacuum every day, no joke! I have two one year olds and a three year old so there is always something to clean up. I must admit I enjoy vacuuming – maybe because it drowns out all the other noise?

  100. I don’t vacuum because the weight of ours is a ton, so my hubby does it, but since I’ve been recently laid off I feel I must take more of his duties and I would love to try with this lighter vacuum. I’ve always heard great things about Oreck, but never had the money for the one of the best. I subscribe to your newsletter and I thank you for the chance!
