MY REVIEW

I really didn’t understand how much I needed a new vacuum cleaner until I got the Oreck XL Gold. The first thing that is AWESOME about this vacuum cleaner is it takes up only a 12″ x 10″ rectangle of my precious closet space. That is a big deal! Our old vacuum was a canister style and took up sooo much space, didn’t store well at all/anywhere, and was akward to use. This Oreck is like going from a covered wagon to a Porsch, and I’m serious!

So it’s great before I even turned it on, and how well it works is just the icing on the cake. Weighing only 9 pounds, the Oreck upright vacuum cleaner is light enough to carry up and down our 2 flights of stairs and also to use with a baby on my hip. It’s also the quietest vacuum cleaner I think I’ve ever heard, so Elliot doesn’t mind it so much. And he really likes the little light on the front too!

Air flow travels at 102 mph so you’d think the vacuum would need a huge motor, but because of the direct path from your carpet to the bag, the XL series actually has a pretty small motor (the reason for its light weight and the use of only 1/3 of the electricity of regular vacuums). The XL Gold also has just the right shape for cleaning under and against furniture and walls, making those hard-to-reach spots not so hard-to-reach.

And most importantly, with a brush that rotates over 6500 times per minute and 102 mph air flow, this upright vacuum picks up more from your carpet. Clean carpet is pretty high on my list of priorities so we have a no shoe rule in our home that is strictly enforced. But the carpet gets dirty anyway, and with two little kids crawling and laying on that carpet, I want it to be as clean as possible!

The XL Gold also includes a handheld vacuum with 8 attachments. The Oreck website suggests using the handheld for areas like stairs, furniture, ceiling fans, molding, bookshelves, curtains, drapes, corners, and lampshades. Frankly, most of those items have not been cleaned at my house in a very long time. I just needed the right kind of gadget!

Sadly, I vacuum once every two weeks when my Shiba Inu isn’t shedding. When he is “molting” as I call it (2 times a year at least), there is fluff EVERYWHERE, and I have to vacuum 2x/week. We’re in the habit of removing shoes (Far East-style) at the entry to reduce the amount of dirt tracked in, so I think that helps some.

I try to vacuum once a week, with the key word being “try”. The result and truth, every other week. That’s my carpeting in the bedrooms. The kitchen and family room, every three days or so. When my daughter was a food-throwing baby, three times a day. When she was a food-throwing toddler, three time a day. Whew, our food-throwing days are over and she’s even gotten very good at not spilling! The stairs are my least favorite – once a month. Our mostly unused living room and dining room – every two weeks.

75 Stephanie August 31, 2009 at 10:20 am: On average I probably vacuum 1-2 times a day, but in reality what actually happens is that every 2-3 days I get on this vacuuming kick and vacuum like 3-4 times in that day. It’s ridiculous. I absolutely hate how dirty my carpets look. As soon as I come across an extra $100 to get the carpets cleaned a no shoe rule will be enforced at my house too. The carpets are just sooo yucky. I sure hope I cmoe home with this vacuum soon, because my poor vacuum is on it’s last legs of life…

In answer to your question, I vacuum once a week. I should vacuum more, I know, but what can you do? Maybe having a vacuum that isn’t so much work will inspire me to vacuum more ;)

The filtration system of the vacuum caught my eye with the phrase, “Dust less often!” Dusting is one of the things right above cleaning the toilets for me. I also thought the handheld vacuum would come in very hand. Trying to vacuum the stairs can be quite the task. I’ve almost been toppled over by my current vacuum several times on the stairs.

I do like to have the floors vacuumed because it helps the whole house look cleaner, at least every few days. If I only get one room done, the vacuum sets out; and if someone stops by, at least they know it’s a work in progress. : )

I used to love vacuuming because every time I heard the vacuum sucking up something yucky from the floor, it made me feel like I was REALLY making the carpet clean for my kids to roll around on. But now that my vacuum doesn’t work very well – can’t hear it sucking up anything! – I don’t enjoy vacuuming as much because I feel like I might as well just be running a blow dryer over the carpet. I have ALWAYS wanted an Oreck but they are pricey and some bill, etc, HAD to be paid before I could treat myself to an Oreck. Isn’t it funny that as we get older, getting a new vacuum actually EXCITES us!! I would LOVE to win a new Oreck!

I have to admit I don’t mind vacuuming – but hauling the vacuum up the stairs and holding the vacuum up to do each stairs is very exhausting. I would love to only vacuum once a week but then I would have to train my kids to never spill or throw cheerios (or other foods) and not to eat in other rooms than the kitchen, but they are only little once! However I recently had a Kirby salesman show me just how my vacuum only picks up the surface dirt and carpet fibers. I’m kinda wishing I’d have bought the Oreck, but will have to get a couple more years out of my current vac before I can spend again! The Oreck would def be better for my neck and back! Oh and I vacuum twice a week, unless I see signs it is needed more.
463 Katie September 8, 2009 at 10:38 am: I try to vacuum about once a week, on Saturdays (“try” being the key word here). We got a cheap vacuum cleaner for our wedding & it hasn’t helped much. We have laminate floors downstairs, so the vacuum cleaner just blows dirt around – literally – and we have old carpet upstairs, and the vacuum often gets clogged on the carpet. (We moved into an apartment recently that had 2 dogs & 3 cats, and I’m not sure if the owners ever cleaned. It was quite a sight when we moved in!) Needless to say, we could sure use a new vacuum cleaner that works. What a great giveaway! :)

September 10, 2009 at 8:50 pm: Yikes! how badly do I want this! im 27 and live in colorado with 2 messy boys! i have wooden floors and in our kitchen have stone tiles (does that make sense?) nonetheless, they are so hard to sweep, swiffer and to vaccum!! i try to vacuum once a week if not def by the end of 2 weeks i vacuum, bc if not, I will lose my mind!
