We always had Thanksgiving dinner at my grandparent’s house with as many members of extended family as could attend. Every year my grandma made her delicious cheese pie, my favorite and most memorable dessert to this day.

Food has a special power when it comes to memory making. For me, cheese pie doesn’t just taste divine, it brings back years of happy memories.

As a family, think of a special dessert that everyone (or most everyone) enjoys and is maybe a little more work than you want to put in for every day occasions. Make that dessert a Thanksgiving tradition.

Another idea from my husband’s family is to ask each family that attends the Thanksgiving dinner to bring a pie. I like this idea because I get to try out a new recipe each year and also sample everyone else’s. I have tons of great holiday dessert recipes and few opportunities to make them. Having a pie extravaganza is also a fun and memorable tradition.

The great thing about in-laws is that you get to have two sets of traditions from each family. The more the merrier! Try to appreciate your in-law’s traditions rather than only wanting to do it your way. Let your family celebrate in all different ways.
