*GAME TIME* Qwixx Card Game

We had the pleasure of trying out another fantastic Gamewright game – this time we played Qwixx. There are two versions – dice and cards. The dice game sounds super fun, but we played the card game and it was easy to learn but fun and challenging for all my kids (ages 13, 11, 8, and 6).

I like that this game isn’t cooperative but it’s also not adversarial either – everyone just tries to get 2 rows locked as fast as they can. Not too fast, because then you don’t get as many points, but fast enough that you don’t lose out to another player.

The design is clever too – the numbers are on both sides of the card, but one side also has a color. The color is kept secret from other players, but everyone can know what numbers you have.

Players draw and discard  cards and try to get as many numbers in sequence from 1-12 or 12-1 in four different color rows. The first player to mark off 2 rows wins! The more numbers you have crossed off in each row, the more points you get.

Each player draws cards on their turn to bring the number in his hand up to 5. Everyone can see what number you’re choosing, but not the color. You never know what color you’re going to get!

Even though you can’t really punish another player, there is still plenty of frustration!

And arguing…but maybe that’s just my family :)

At the end of the game, the winner is the player with the most points. Each of my kids has their own way of crossing numbers out and they have gotten to be pretty strategic about their game play decisions. I have yet to win! I did beat my husband (highly unusual, he is very strategic and good at games…) but I can’t beat my kids! I like that about this game, anyone can win!

Have you played the dice version of the game? I want to play both to see if I like one better. I’d love to know if you have an opinion – let’s hear it in the comments!

This is a great game to add to your family collection. We think you’ll love it!
