Westward Expansion Wrap Up

by Kelsey Norwood

in Homeschool

We’re studying Westward Expansion this unit (I get my rotation schedule here, we’ve been doing this schedule for a year and are loving it so much.) We finished up our readings about the Erie Canal, the Pony Express, Annie Oakley, Tall Tales, Davy Crockett, Native Americans, and more. The 19th century is such a fun time period to study.

We take one week in between units to throw out the schedules and put away the math and just have fun with history.

We made these Pioneer Muffins – they feel pioneerish to me because of the applesauce, molasses, and oats. So so yummy.

We did a Pony Express Re-enactment with bicycles instead of horses.

We started our pioneer journals.

I love the pioneer/expansion stories of wide open adventure, new beginnings, and ingenuity and hard work. We hope to do some other fun stuff this week, maybe some of these projects:

We’ll be eating lots more pioneer food – scones, apple pie…all best stuff. And hopefully we’ll have time to research some stories of of our own pioneer ancestors. I could spend 6 months on this topic! Maybe we just will…
