MY REVIEW

I’ve been itching to get into dutch oven cooking for a while now, and today’s review/giveaway is for two products that have made it all possible.

Volcano Grill

I received a Volcano Collapsible Propane Grill for review, and this little collapsible stove is one of the handiest tools in all my preparedness gear. I first saw the Volcano at the Self Reliance Expo last October and it was a product that just made sense for two main reasons:

  • it collapses to 5″ and
  • it’s a tri-fuel grill so you can use it to cook with propane, charcoal, or wood

Better yet, you can put it on a table or on the two foot wide sidewalk in your tiny excuse for a backyard (like we did). Use it in the back of your truck for a tailgate party, for picnics, camping, and any no open fire zone. (It really does collapse down very small, shorter than Woody Mr. Potato Head.)

volcano grill carrying case

It comes in a very sturdy and super convenient carrying case with room for all the parts and pieces, a cookbook, cleaning supplies, and hot pad, if you please.

I love that we can easily use this in our tiny backyard because I want to practice my dutch oven cooking before we’re actually camping and relying on good results. I’ve had too many interesting dutch oven meals that didn’t turn out quite as planned. It’s so easy to set up the Volcano (in about 5 seconds) and give a recipe a trial run before the real deal.

We also don’t have a barbecue, and the Volcano is a perfect space-efficient substitute for a big, bulky, and EXPENSIVE barbecue, and it’s something you can carry with you for recreational or emergency purposes.

volcano grill

We pulled out our Volcano last week and planned to make cornbread, but this being our first time cooking with charcoal on a cold winter day without a charcoal starter…we had some trouble with the charcoal. We decided to try with something a little easier for our first time and scrambled some eggs, and they turned out perfect and cooked super fast.

The Volcano was so easy to figure out and use – it’s already assembled so no complicated building, and you simply pull on the handle to pop the grill out of its collapsed state.

propanecharcoalwood

The brilliance of the Volcano is the fuel versatility. Cook with propane, charcoal, or wood depending on your circumstances, location, and supplies, and get great results every time. The only trick is to make sure the adjustable air vent is open enough to allow oxygen to the fuel. Because the grill is shaped like a volcano and theĀ  fuel is at the very bottom, your dutch oven rests down inside with the heat insulated around it for an ultra-efficient use of fuel.

Lodge

The 12″ Lodge Camp Dutch Oven is the perfect size for the Volcano and is plenty big to feed an average sized family. The cast iron is heavy and solid and when properly cared for will last a lifetime and more. All dutch ovens come with cast iron use and care instructions that you can also find on the Lodge website. Caring properly for cast iron is what will ensure its long life, so read carefully before using!

Lodge camp dutch ovens are perfect because they stand up on 3 legs to allow space underneath for charcoal and also a flat lid for resting charcoal on top. I love that each dutch oven has the size right on the lid so you never have to wonder.

Lodge also makes enamel dutch ovens for stove top and oven use, which is essential for cooking meats and making some kinds of breads. One of those babies is next on my wish list!

I’ve been collecting cast iron dutch oven recipes for a while, and with my Lodge dutch oven and Volcano Grill, we’re going to be doing tons of outdoor cooking this summer!

Thanks to Volcano Grills and Lodge for sponsoring today’s review/giveaway!
