Lisa Singer is a first time guest blogger on Vanilla Joy! She writes about gardening experiences, tips, and kid-friendly recipes on her blog, Backyard Botanical.

How do you get your kids excited about fruits and vegetables? Start a garden in your backyard. Children are natural gardeners and love to help make things grow. Try planting some carrots, beets, strawberries or zucchini. These are all easy to grow and can be used to make delicious snacks or desserts that are secretly nutritious. Here are some ideas:

Carrots: Oven Baked Carrot Fries ( or Carrot Oatmeal Muffins (

Beets: Chocolate Beet Brownies (

Strawberries: Strawberry Freeze (

Zucchini: Blueberry Zucchini Bread (

After your kids taste these yummy treats, they’ll definitely be open to trying more homegrown goodies!

Lisa is my hero! I love you blog and can’t wait to put the Carrot Fry recipe to use! I also can’t wait to start a garden at my new house! I love your cost comparison and counter- do you use an application to keep track of your garden’s production? Thanks!
