Favorite Thing #6: Movies

in Stuff I Love

While I am not an avid TV watcher, I do like movies occasionally. Movies are great for a couple reasons:

  • no commercials
  • you can skip the smutty scenes
  • you can watch the good ones over and over

We got something old and something new: Sense and Sensibility (1995) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007).

I love Jane Austen and I find that the movies of her books are actually quite good. I love the new Pride and Prejudice that came out in 2005 and also the old, very long, and very delightful A&E version. I also love Emma – that’s on my wish list. Sense and Sensibility is a great family friendly movie.

Now. As for Harry Potter movies. Honestly, sometimes they are quite frustrating to watch, having read the books many times over. However; the fifth movie as a movie unto itself and not being compared to the book, is quite good. I did enjoy it. And we have the first four movies ($3.98 each a la Target’s Black Friday sale in 2006) and so we can’t very well go without the rest of the series, can we? I don’t think so.

I think I will just require that my children read the books before ever watching the movies to prevent the silly notion that they don’t actually need to read the books because they’ve seen the movies. Enough said about that. I really am thrilled to have the 5th movie – it was one of my favorite movies of 2007.

Both of these movies are excellent additions to a family movie collection.
